First Details About io’s Upcoming Screenless Chat GPT Device

From article by Chris Smith, published in BGR on May 22, 2025.

In this post, we are sharing insights from the Chris Smith article referenced below, as it highlights what is widely recognized as the next critical trend in real world AI applications, including AI wearables.

ABSTRACT:

Just before Google launched its I/O 2025 event,  an even more impressive showcase of AI innovation than the previous year, there was speculation that OpenAI might try to upstage Google with a last-minute ChatGPT reveal.

This time, however, OpenAI didn’t repeat its previous surprise tactics. Instead, it opted for a more calculated move, unveiling something even bigger just two days after Google’s main keynote: the first io ChatGPT product.

The announcement came via a sleek video featuring OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and renowned designer Jony Ive. In the video, they revealed a new partnership between OpenAI, io, and Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom. They also hinted at a broader lineup of AI-driven hardware devices coming in the future.

According to the announcement Altman is already using a completed prototype of the mysterious io ChatGPT device, though no technical details were disclosed. What was made clear is that it won’t be a laptop, too clunky for casual AI interaction, and despite speculation, it likely won’t be a phone either. Earlier reports suggest the new venture has no intention of entering the smartphone market.
