ABSTRACT:
Just before Google launched its I/O 2025 event, an even more impressive showcase of AI innovation than the previous year, there was speculation that OpenAI might try to upstage Google with a last-minute ChatGPT reveal.
This time, however, OpenAI didn’t repeat its previous surprise tactics. Instead, it opted for a more calculated move, unveiling something even bigger just two days after Google’s main keynote: the first io ChatGPT product.
The announcement came via a sleek video featuring OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and renowned designer Jony Ive. In the video, they revealed a new partnership between OpenAI, io, and Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom. They also hinted at a broader lineup of AI-driven hardware devices coming in the future.
According to the announcement Altman is already using a completed prototype of the mysterious io ChatGPT device, though no technical details were disclosed. What was made clear is that it won’t be a laptop, too clunky for casual AI interaction, and despite speculation, it likely won’t be a phone either. Earlier reports suggest the new venture has no intention of entering the smartphone market.
